TECH TIP FOR DECEMBER, 1992
IF YOU HAVE A 1988/89 OLDSMOBILE EIGHTY/EIGHT OR NINETY/EIGHT, EQUIPPED WITH THE 3800 V6, WHICH KEEPS RUNNING AFTER THE KEY HAS BEEN TURNED OFF, CHECK THE PART OF THE MAF/TPS WIRING HARNESS THAT GOES BEHIND THE BACK OF THE ALTERNATOR. OLDSMOBILE HAS FOUND THAT SOMETIMES THE PINK AND BLACK MAF IGNITION FEED WIRE HAS TOUCHED THE BATTERY TERMINAL ON THE ALTERNATOR AND RUBBED THROUGH, ALLOWING CURRENT TO FLOW BACK TO THE IGNITION SWITCH.
THIS CAN BE AN INTERMITTENT CONDITION, BUT REROUTING THE HARNESS AFTER REPAIRING THE INSULATION CAN BE A SIMPLE FIX FOR AN ANNOYING PROBLEM.
SOME 1986 ARIES/RELIANT WITH AN MDH PRIOR TO 12/05/17, WILL EXHIBIT THE RIGHT SIDE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHT BEING DIMMER THAN THE LEFT SIDE. THIS WILL OCCUR ONLY IN THE LOW BEAM MODE WHEN EITHER HIGH BEAM IS BURNED OUT.
THE CAUSE IS THE L3 & L9 CIRCUITS IN THE RIGHT HEADLIGHT CONNECTOR HAVE BEEN REVERSED, AT THE FACTORY. SIMPLY REMOVE THE WIRES FROM THE CONNECTOR AND REVERSE THEIR POSITIONS.
