Ford PMGR Retro Fit Instructions

Installing the newer style Ford PMGR starters into older direct drive applications is fairly simple. Below is our instructions for one of the simplier ways of doing the installation. We would also like to note that attaching the large and small studs together on the new starter and installing the starter without modifying the original wiring, is very not recommended. What will happen is the starter will stay engaged briefly after each starter. This will add tremendous wear to the starter and it will fail prematurely.

Doing it correctly is really easy. We will start with a picture:

Here is what your vehicle should currently look like. You will have two small wires going ot the “S” and the “I” terminals. They stay where they are, so no need to touch them.

Step 1: Disconnect the battery ground cables, all of them if there is more than one

Step 2: Unbolt Cable “B” and move it over to the same side as Cable “A”

Step 3: Attach a 10ga wire to the stud that Cable “B” was orginally on.

When completed you should have a solenoid wired like this:

If you dont have this or are confused, please call our Tech Line at 1-888-214-7774 before going any further.

Step 4: Attach large Cable “B” to large stud on starter’s solenoid (See Below)

Step 5: Attach small wire “C” to small stud on starter’s solenoid. (See Below)

Step 6: Reattach battery ground cables.

Step 7: Perform voltage drop test on the system.
