TECH TIP FOR JULY, 1992
ON 1981-87 CHRYSLER "K" CARS, HAVING A 2.6L W/O FI, IF YOU EXPERIENCE REPEATED ALTERNATOR FAILURE, CHECK FOR A SHORTED COOLING FAN RELAY. THIS WILL CAUSE THE DIODE TRIO IN THE ALTERNATOR TO FAIL PREMATURELY.
ON 1990 CHRYSLER VEHICLES WHICH MAKE A CHIRPING OR SNAPPING NOISE AT THE FRONT OF THE ENGINE, IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THE ALTERNATOR MOUNTING BRACKET IS MISALIGNED AND IS CAUSING THE BELT TO " WALK " ON THE SERPENTINE PULLEY.
TO CHECK, SPRAY WATER ON THE GROOVED SURFACE OF THE BELT WHILE THE ENGINE IS RUNNING. IF THE NOISE SUBSIDES AND THEN RETURNS AS THE BELT DRIES, BRACKET MISALIGNMENT IS PROBABLY TYHE PROBLEM. IF THE NOISE DOES NOT SUBSIDE THEN THE ALTERNATOR BELT IS NOT THE PROBLEM.
DO NOT USE BELT DRESSING, SILICONE SPRAY, OR BRAKE FLUID AS A SUBSTITUTE FOR WATER.THESE MATERIALS WILL ACT AS A LUBRICANT AND TEMPORARILY MASK THE PROBLEM.
