The Smart Solenoid
Description:
In basic terms this is a solenoid with a regulator attached to it. The regulator senses the system voltage in the vehicle. When it sees a system voltage of 13.2 volts it closes the solenoid.
When this unit is placed between two batteries banks it acts like a separator. When the system voltage is above 13.2 volts the solenoid is closed and the two batteries are connected. When the system voltage drops below 13.2 volts, the solenoid is opened which separates the two batteries.
This works especially well when you have a system load that is greater than the output of the system’s alternator. This is most commonly found in high-end car stereo systems. The smart solenoid protects the vehicle battery and charging system from the high load of a stereo system.
An example is you have a series of amps that require 200amps of input (2000watts), plus the vehicle’s regular amperage requirements, which we will say is 80amps. This gives us a total system requirement of 280amps when the amps are under full load.
This would require an extremely large and expensive alternator to power it. But if a rear battery is installed as well as the smart solenoid (see diagram below), you can use an alternator less than the full system requirements. We will say 140amps for our example.
During normal playing the stereo does not draw full load, for this example we will say 36amps (500watts). The vehicle still requires around 80amps, so we have a total of 116amps. When the bass hits for an instant, this load spikes to 280amps. This spike would drop the system voltage below the 13.2 volts, and the solenoid would open. This causes the amps to draw their power directly from the rear battery. Which is ok as most batteries are design to release this much power easily.
When the load decreases, you get out of the bass, the system voltage will rise again. The solenoid then closes, reconnecting the two batteries. The alternator then senses the average state of charge of the front and rear batteries, and then proceeds to recharge them. This would be accomplished by an extra 20 amps of output for 10 seconds (not an exact calculation). This however keeps the alternator to within its output capabilities.
This also eliminates any voltage drops below 13.2 volts in your vehicles electrical system. i.e. Your lights don’t dim anymore.
